Education is the heart of any community. It is what inspires students to innovate and overcome superstitions. Education is vital for the economic prosperity of not just a city, but a nation. Regardless of income, students should be able to receive higher education at an affordable cost. In addition, Focus Philly advocates a fair funding formula across school districts which will lead to more public funds for basic education.
There is no doubt that a good education for all students from K-12 to college is essential for the country to compete with other countries. We support a strong and fair funding framework for K-12 education that does not disadvantage some school districts over others. We also advocate for public schools, and do not think that expanding charter schools will help us improve educational standards, but will re-direct resources away from public schools. We think that a two- and four-year public college education should be provided either for free or at low cost to all students.
While we strongly support college-bound students, not all students are inclined to go to college. We, therefore, also support full city and state funding of trade schools that provide young people with the necessary skills to compete for skilled, manual work at decent wages and with opportunities for personal career advancement.
